Beyond excited, thrilled and extremely honoured.....

I first wrote about this incredibly moving and inspiring story in June, I then did a follow up in August.
When I wrote my first blog post - An Amazing Story about Life, Love & Cancer, I said that I really thought that stumbling across Meghan's blog The Bees Knees had forever changed my life. I guess we all have moments in our life when we hope to be able to do great things. To be able to pay it forward in life so to speak. So when I was asked to join the organizing team for the 2011 Tubbs Romp to Stomp out Breast Cancer Snowshoe Series one of the first things I did was contact Adam again. Recalling that I had seen on Meghan's list Snowshoeing as one of her goals. This would be that moment for me. The moment when I didn't even think twice, I know the pain of a lost loved one to cancer ( my dad ), so I can imagine in some small ways what Adam is going through. I am beyond excited, thrilled and extremely honoured to be able to tell you that Adam accepted my invitation and he will be coming to take part in the Tubbs Romp to Stomp out breast cancer. To be able to help Adam accomplish one of Meghan's goals is such an honour.
I am now asking that if you have not already registered to come and be a part of this fabulous event, that you do so now. We all have our own reasons, mothers, grandmothers, wives, aunts, daughters, best friends, sisters, even the men in our life could get breast cancer. So come out and let's all stomp together, join the 100's of participants already registered, support a future without breast cancer and if you have been moved by Adam & Meghan then come and share in small piece of Adam and Meghan's incredible journey as Adam accomplishes #8 on Meghan's list of "New Goals"....

Here is Meghan's list now updated with the goals that Adam has accomplished over the last few months, including taking a train across Canada, travelling to India to volunteer with children for 3 months, etc.

So.... here we go- (Thursday, September 10, 2009)
Life Goals...

1) To hold a PhD, I'm not too picky on what it is going to be in. The way I am going though, I think it's bound to be nursing.
2) To learn another language. I've got a head start on Korean and French, I just need to get motivated enough to do it.
3) To master at least one of the following musical instruments - cornet, cello, piano, or guitar.
4) To live in at least 5 different countries - So far I've only got Canada and Korea. I'm assuming that I will have United States in the near future (preferably San Fran, DC, Portland and Maine). I'm thinking somewhere in Europe and in South America?
5) To run a half marathon. I've a lot of training to do though, seeing as the 5km I ran today was far from easy.
6)
Spend at least 100 hours volunteering. (Note*** So far I'm up to 40h :)) (finished Oct. 1, 2010
7) Master the following- sewing, knitting & crocheting (Note*** on my way with knitting/sewing, kinda sorta)
8) Become part owner of a Bed & Breakfast (with Adam)
9) Travel to 30 countries. I'm at 7 now.
10) Read at least 12 books a year until I die (Textbooks NOT included).
Born To Run - Christopher McDougall
On The Road - Jack Kerouac
Eat Pray Love - Elizabeth Gilbert
Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman - Jon Krakauer
The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingslover
Eating Animals - Jonathan Safran Foer
Outliers - Malcolm Gladwell
Freakonomics - Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
11) Complete 'The Weekend to End Breast Cancer' 60km walk in Toronto. Sept 11-12.
12) Own a little cottage by a lake.
New Goals-
1)
Take the train across CanadaAugust 10th, 2010
2)
Go to an NHL game (don't really care where, I just want to go) March 6th in Ottawa
3)
Make Peter take me (and friends) to a Blue Jays game... I don't really have any interest in baseball, but I think it would be fun.August 11, 2010
4)
Go to the Symphony. Feb 20th in Toronto
5)
Get married (hahaha, um... no pressure Adam) March 28th in Petrolia
6) Go to Canada's Wonderland with my friends/family
7) Take a road trip back to Maine
8) Go snowshoeing
9) Go ice-skating on the Rideau Canal
10) Get my darn tooth fixed
11) Get some darn shiny nice new glasses
12) I've always wanted to go to Ireland with my father... it's been a dream of mine since I was just a little girl. My father has been, and he loved it. I would love to share this with him while I still can. I don't think I'm ready to let go of this dream yet.
13) See the northern lights.
14)
Travel to India to volunteer with children.

The fitness benefits of snowshoeing!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

With the start of most new years comes the start of new plans, new goals, a lot of people decide to focus on becoming more active and getting healthier!
I recently received an email from Good Energy Coach Sarah Heipel. One of the sections of Sarah's email included a reminder about the fitness benefits of snowshoeing. I asked Sarah Sarah if she would like to share some information on the blog.

ENJOY!

Snowshoeing & Other Winter-Fit Activity Tips

Keeping hydrated - in my opinion, the best is a simple recipe of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and sea salt. Stir/shake and it's the perfect "sports drink" carbohydrates, minerals and electrolytes to keep you and the kids going for hours. We need to drink half our body weight in oz of water daily. It's good to assume about a litre for every 1-2hr for an adult.

Our muscles can only store 90min worth of glycogen "muscle fuel" at a time. It's smart to take in about 30g of carbohydrates every 30min during intense activity...like trucking through deep snow. The above drink will do it, or even a piece of fruit (1/2 a banana).

Dressing in layers is key. A thin pair of socks over a thicker pair will make even a cheap pair of boots much warmer. There are some really cool boots and shoes specific to outdoor winter fun ( I can talk about these) but there are also el-cheap-o ways to get by and still be comfortable. If there is wind a scarf or neck/face protector will be appreciated. It also helps to warm the air before it gets to your lungs, especially important if you are exercising hard and cannot continue to breath through your nose.

Getting overheated can quickly lead to exhaustion and dehydration..not fun.

Family -make it fun! snowshoe up a hill and then crazy carpet down to the bottom. Plan for a meal/hot chocolate together afterwards.

- make it enjoyable for all: cater to the fitness level of the lease active person

Calories burned from x-ski and snowshoeing will be about 20% higher than the treadmill and 10% more than on an elliptical, when the work effort is of the comparable intensity.

To get the most out of your workout add intervals of either hills or speed with recovery time in between, carry in a lunch or snacks so you can go longer/further, time yourself and see if you can do it faster next time, relaxation to look forward to afterwards like hot tubing!, use poles when snowshoeing for extra burn, skate skiing is more intense than classic cross country, ...I could go on and on.

Great benefits can be seen when doing this 1-2x per week when combined and active lifestyle through the rest of the week and healthy eating habits.

Results will be seen and felt within 2 weeks if the intensity, frequency and nutrition is appropriate.

Your idea of get the most "fitness benefit" through snowshoeing is a great idea. We could hit a trail with our snowshoes on and discuss proper layering (clothing), posture on snowshoes, polling technique, fun to be outside in nature (good for the soul), muscles used, how to choose a pace, keeping hydrated and fuelled, the benefits: fat loss, muscle tone, energy, sleeping better, vit D, mood increase, healthy hormones, easy, circulation, etc.

Inspiring and amazing people!

I have to tell you that since becoming one of the Run Director's for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure in Collingwood, I have met lots of truly amazing people.

One of those people I met this past October. Her name is Margaret Stuart. I randomly send out emails to some participants really to just introduce myself and let them know how grateful we are for their support of this great event. This is how I met Margaret, on September 28th of this year I sent her an email letting her know I was one of the Volunteer Run Directors, and thanking her for being a part of our run site for the first time. Margaret's name had come up on my run reports as one of the top fundraisers from out of nowhere one day, I also noticed on her page that she had just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months before, so I expressed to her how truly sorry I was. I heard back from Margaret the following day, and honestly, I have shared a part of her email with many people. I was in aw of what she said. Margaret told me how she was having her second surgery the following week, then she said....

"As I have mentioned to my supporters, one absolutely has to look for positives - like a great surgeon, husband, my understanding and caring staff at work, a wonderful community like Collingwood (unfortunately, we are only part time residents), and we have 2 large comical dogs, who keep me laughing with their constant antics."

I thought to myself, here is this woman, who has breast cancer and it's horrible and scary and she is telling me that you have to forget all that and look at the positives in your life! Which is true! But I was amazed and I couldn't wait to meet her in person!!

I met Margaret the day before the run at the run site, while we were setting up she came down to pick up her team kits. She was so excited about running the next day. Margaret had told me in emails how she was a runner, she had never taken part in this event before, so she was excited to do so. I stood there talking to Margaret and her husband and I was incredibly excited for what the following day would bring. The feeling of run day is like nothing else, it's empowering, emotional, the air truly feels electric. I couldn't wait for Margaret to stand side by side with men, women, children, other Survivors, and to know that they were all there for the same reason. Running, walking, volunteering, all for a future without breast cancer!
I have to tell you that when it came time for awards I was so excited, because the first Survivor that had crossed the finish line was MARGARET! One of the prizes she received for crossing the finish line was donated to our run site from Tubbs Snowshoes. A brand new pair of snowshoes. I have kept in touch with Margaret since the run, I am also on the organizing team for the 2011 Tubbs Romp to Stomp out breast cancer snowshoe series, as you can see from the blog now having changed gears. Margaret is now looking forward to taking part in the Tubbs Romp to Stomp. Of course is all depends on what stages her treatments are at come Feb 19th. But she already has a team of people who want to take part with her and is trying to decide between a couple different fun team names.

I heard from Margaret a few weeks ago and that is when I decided to write this blog post. Margaret shared with me that she had been featured in iRun Magazine! Congratulations to Margaret, it is an amazing article and I strongly suggest you take a moment to read it! Margaret thank you for your amazingly positive outlook on life!

Come out and join us @ Scenic Cave on Saturday February 19th @ 11am and let's all strap on some snowshoes and Stomp out breast cancer together!
